Nam Phan vs Jimy Hettes UFC 141 12BET 12/31 11AM GMT+8

Hettes earned himself a UFC contract after defeating Jacob Kirwan at MASS: Inauguration in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in July. He continued his impressive winning streak, replacing an injured Leonard Garcia at UFC Live: Hardy vs Lytle, defeating former TUF contestant Alex “Bruce LeRoy” Caceres via submission in the second round.
Hettes has been recently making his rounds around camps in the North East, training with UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and veteran Kris McCray in preparation for the fight with Phan. A BJJ practitioner since the age of 16, Hettes has proven his worth when it comes to the ground game, finishing every fight via submission, with all but two coming in the first round. While Hette’s BJJ and Judo can’t be questioned, he’s a two-time Keystone Games gold medalist, he’ll be facing a seasoned veteran of MMA in Phan.

While Phan’s UFC career hasn’t started the way he would like, there is no denying the talent and power of Phan. Prior to entering season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter, Phan had fought some of the top fighters in the world in both the featherweight and Lightweight divisions.

With fights with Omigawa, Josh Thompson and JZ Cavalcante, among others, Phan was one of the more seasoned fighters going into the season and prove his worth, defeating all fighters entering the semi-finals of the season. Phan would fall just short, losing a very close split decision against Michael Johnson.
Even with the loss, Phan earned himself a UFC contract, dropping back down to Featherweight. His UFC career wouldn’t start off well, dropping his first two fights in the UFC, one to former champion Mike Brown at UFC 133 and a controversial decision to Leonard Garcia in his UFC debut.
Phan righted the ship at UFC 136, avenging the loss to Garcia, defeating him by decision and earning himself another Fight of the Night award.

Both fighters are versed in submission, but the one thing that might separate them is the striking and wrestling. Phan has proven himself to a be heavy-handed and versed striker, while Hettes has improved in his striking, is much more versatile in both wrestling and in the clinch with his Judo.-= http://www.opposingviews.com/

MORALES-GARCIA CALLED OFF

Next month's world-title fight between Erik Morales and Danny Garcia has been called off.

The pair had been due to meet in Houston on January 28 for Morales' WBC light-welterweight title.

However, Morales has pulled out as he requires more time to recover from recent gall-bladder surgery.

Golden Boy Promotions' Eric Gomez told ESPN.com: "He's not going to fight. He called me and told me the doctor said he feels he needs a little more time to heal internally.

"He said the doctor said everything looks fine on the outside but he needed more time. Could he fight? Erik said he could fight, but the doctor said he doesn't want him to fight."

It is expected the fight will be rearranged for late February or early March. - htp://www.sportinglife.com

Fighter of the Year: Andre Ward

It's fair to say Ward was the find of the inaugural World Super Six Classic tournament - to give it it's full title - with his crowning glory coming against Froch in Atlantic City.

The former Olympic gold medallist entered the event - which hoped to find the best super-middleweight in the world - over two years ago as something of an unknown with the only 'name' on his CV being former middleweight contender Edison Miranda.

That he had hardly lost a round in a 20-fight career went rather unnoticed with bigger and better-known names such as Jermain Taylor, Mikkel Kessler and Froch entering the six-man round robin contest.

But after dominating former Kessler in his opening match-up, Ward cruised through to the final as the likes of Taylor fell by the wayside. Still he hadn't gained full recognition - the quietly focused 'Son of God' lacking the charisma of say a Mayweather or Pacquiao.

But Ward lets his fists do the talking against Froch and, allied to blinding foot speed and reflexes, now finds himself in the top five in pound-for-pound lists. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Knockout of the Year: Donaire v Montiel

A knockout in all but name. Former flyweight champion Donaire had had only one fight up at bantamweight before he was matched with WBC and WBO champion Montiel.

Mexican Montiel had a stellar career at fly and super-flyweight before taking his power to bantamweight where four of his title defences had ended early.

So it was a hotly-anticipated match-up at the Mandalay Bay in February, one that was not expected to go the distance.

The pair stayed out of range in a cagey opening, each wary of the other's power. But when Montiel opened up with a right hook in the second round, Donaire caught him with a wicked left that detonated on Montiel's chin, sending convulsions through his body.

He somehow made it to his feet, but why the referee allowed the fight to continue only he knows. Thankfully he stepped in two punches later realising Montiel was in no position to defend himself. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Comeback of the Year: Erik Morales

Many questioned the motives behind last year's ring return of 'El Terrible', after previously announcing his retirement in 2007 following defeat to David Diaz - his fifth loss in six fights.

But return he did, and after two wins he took on ex-Amir Khan victim Marcos Maidana for the WBA light-welterweight title. It looked a mismatch on paper, with Morales - now 34 - taking on the big-punching Argentine at a weight 18lb above the super-bantamweight division where he made his name.

Not so. Despite a difficult start, Morales showed all his ring smarts and renowned heart to get back into the fight, only for Maidana to win a majority decision.

Nonetheless, it confirmed Morales was back and still a force in the fight game - and his chance would come later in the year when Timothy Bradley was stripped of the WBC title for not fighting Amir Khan. - http://www.sportinglife.com

FLOYD MAYWEATHER JAILED

Floyd Mayweather Jnr has been sentenced to 90 days imprisonment on domestic violence charges.

The WBC welterweight champion, widely regarded as boxing's best pound-for-pound fighter, pleaded guilty to reduced domestic battery and harassment.

Las Vegas Judge Melissa Saragosa ordered Mayweather to report to jail on January 6, while the 34-year-old must also complete 100 hours' community service and pay a fine of £1,600.

Mayweather struck a plea bargain with prosecutors and will avoid trial on further allegations.

The unbeaten star, who last fought against Victor Ortiz in September, was due to return to the ring in May against an unnamed opponent. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Mayweather sent to jail for attack

A Las Vegas judge has sentenced boxer Floyd Mayweather to six months behind bars for a 2010 attack on the mother of his children, but half of that jail term was suspended, officials said.

Mayweather, the World Boxing Council welterweight champion, pleaded guilty to one count of battery and no contest to two counts of harassment after reaching a deal with prosecutors, said Mary Ann Price, spokeswoman for the Clark County Courts.

Those charges were part of a criminal complaint against Mayweather, 34, that originally included charges of robbery, grand larceny and coercion over an altercation at the home of his former girlfriend, Josie Harris.
Las Vegas Judge Melissa Saragosa sentenced Mayweather to six months in jail, but she only ordered him to serve three months behind bars, officials said.

Saragosa suspended the other three months of the sentence, but if he is arrested again or fails to complete certain parts of his sentence he would have to spend those three months in jail, said Tess Driver, spokeswoman for the Clark County District Attorney's Office which prosecuted the case.
The judge ordered Mayweather to complete 100 hours of community service and attend a 12-month domestic violence program, officials said.

Mayweather, who lives in Las Vegas, must report to court on January 6 to be transferred to jail, officials said.
An attorney for Mayweather could not be reached for comment.

Mayweather originally faced a maximum sentence of over 30 years in jail in the case, Driver said.
A criminal complaint against Mayweather states he battered Harris in November 2010, when he grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the floor and struck her. The robbery and larceny charges against Mayweather related to allegations that he took Harris' cell phone.

He is due back in court for a separate case next week, when he is expected to plead guilty to a charge of misdemeanour battery against a security guard, Driver said. That would carry a $1,000 fine, she said.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Mayweather accepts plea deal, clear cases

Undefeated US boxing star Floyd Mayweather will plead guilty to reduced charges on Wednesday in a deal to end two pending criminal cases, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Tuesday.

Mayweather faced up to 34 years in prison over a domestic violence incident and another charge of battery on a security guard in a dispute involving traffic tickets, but might serve only as little as two days behind bars.

Clark County district lawyer David Roger told the newspaper that Mayweather will enter guilty pleas in Las Vegas Justice Court on one count of battery domestic violence and two counts of harassment, all misdemeanours.

Prosecutors retained the right to argue for sentencing under the deal and Mayweather could face $3,000 in fines and a minimum of two days in jail up to a maximum to 18 months behind bars.

Mayweather, 34, was set to have a preliminary hearing on Wednesday on felony charges that included coercion, grand larceny and robbery from a 2010 incident involving ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and their three children. - http://www.nzherald.co.nz

CLEVERLY KEEN TO FACE FROCH

WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly is open to the possibility of facing Carl Froch.

The unbeaten Cefn Forest fighter, 24, watched 'The Cobra' surrender his WBC super-middleweight title with a lop-sided points defeat to Andre Ward on Saturday night.

And Cleverly, who also has veteran WBC light-heavyweight king Bernard Hopkins in his sights, says a domestic showdown with Froch could prove to be a classic.

The Welshman told Sky Sports News: "I think it's a fight that would make sense - two British fighters and obviously I'm only one weight division up from Carl Froch and I'm world champion.

"It'd be a great fight for both of us and for the British public. It's inevitable that it would be an exciting fight because I know Carl likes to stand his ground and let shots go. Likewise with myself - I don't like taking a backward step. It could be a classic.

"If promoters sat together and made the fight, it could be done quite soon. We'll have to see how it pans out but there's no reason it can't happen.

"As for Froch v Ward, I think Andre Ward showed that he was different class on the night. He's probably one of the best pound-for-pound fighters out there. There's no disgrace for Carl Froch."

Cleverly was last in action in October when he battled to a majority decision over Liverpool fighter Tony Bellew. - - http://www.setanta.com

IBF reject Khan claims

The IBF have rejected Amir Khan's appeal against his controversial defeat to Lamont Peterson on December 10th.

The Englishman was hit with two points reductions in the fight for pushing and was ultimately defeated on points, losing both his IBF and WBA light-welterweight titles.

Khan immediately asked for a rematch and said the IBF should look into overturning the result due to its controversial nature.

However, they have rejected these claims and say they're happy with the result.

"We found no discrepancies that would affect the outcome or the result of the fight," IBF championships chairman Lindsay Tucker said.

"We decided not to order an immediate rematch on the basis of the fact that in the rules, if the referee feels that it's a foul, then that's his call to take a point. He did warn Khan several times before he actually took the first point."

FROCH UNDER WEIGHT LIMIT

Both Carl Froch and Andre Ward made the weight at the first attempt ahead of the final of the Super Six in Atlantic City on Saturday night.

WBA super-middleweight champion Ward made the 168lb (12st) limit on the money after WBC king Froch had tipped the scales half-a-pound lighter moments earlier.

The 'Cobra' was happy to trade words with his opponent at the traditional face-off while Ward also made his thoughts known.

The Nottingham banger seemed very relaxed just over 24 hours before the biggest fight of his career, maintaining the belief that he holds the upper hand despite entering the fight as a big underdog.

"I do strongly believe - and that's one of the things I told him - that he can't knock me out," Froch told Sky Sports News.

"He's a very good fighter, he's not a big puncher but I can punch very hard, and I am in the ring tomorrow night to let him know I can punch hard, from round one to 12 if necessary."

The weigh-in was well attended by British fans looking for a victory that would go a long way towards atoning for the defeat of Amir Khan in Washington last week. -http://www.sportinglife.com

Haye will wait for Vitali

David Haye has said he not given up hope of fighting WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in the future.

The 31-year-old announced his retirement off the back of his defeat by Klitschko's brother, Wladimir, in July but has since confirmed he hopes to step back in the ring.

The Londoner saw his hopes of a showdown with the 40-year-old scuppered when German broadcaster RTL announced on Monday that Vitali would be fighting Haye's countryman Dereck Chisora.

Haye still believes he has a chance to get back in the ring and is determined not to end his career with a defeat.

"When myself and Vitali potentially fight is unknown as yet but we're still talking," he told The Sun.

"It hasn't really affected me in any way, shape or form.

"I can wait as long as it takes. He's 40 at the moment, I've just turned 31. If he was to leave it five years that's fine by me."

He added: "Technically I would have lied to my fans about retiring if I fight again.

"But those same fans obviously wouldn't ideally want me to finish on a loss.

"They would want me to finish by knocking out either Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko.

"I'm sure they'll forgive me if I get that fight with Vitali and knock him out like I plan to do." - http://www.setanta.com

HAYE STILL KEEN ON KLITSCHKO FIGHT

Vitali Klitschko's upcoming fight with Dereck Chisora has not dampened David Haye's enthusiasm for a bout against the Ukrainian.

Haye, 31, is technically retired having lost his last fight, and with it his WBA heavyweight title, to Klitschko's brother Wladimir in July.

Talk of a fight with Vitali, 40, persists, though the WBC champion's fight with Haye's fellow Briton Chisora, confirmed last night by German broadcaster RTL, appears to muddy the water further.

Haye told The Sun: "When myself and Vitali potentially fight is unknown as yet but we're still talking.

"It hasn't really affected me in any way, shape or form.

"I can wait as long as it takes. He's 40 at the moment, I've just turned 31. If he was to leave it five years that's fine by me."

REFEREE COST ME MY TITLES - KHAN

Amir Khan blamed referee Joseph Cooper for his shock light-welterweight world title defeat to Lamont Peterson, insisting he was "against two people" in the ring.

Khan, who lost a split decision to home fighter Peterson by two scores of 113-112 against him at the George E Washington Convention Center, was deducted a point by Cooper in both the seventh and 12th rounds for pushing.

Khan unsurprisingly disputed the calls - which were decisive in the outcome of the bout - and insisted any pushing was prompted by Peterson's own foul play.

"It was like I was against two people in there," he said. "He kept trying to pick me up. He was wild. He was coming in with his head lower and lower every time.

"I had to push him away because he was trying to come in with his head. He was just so low. He was being effective in pressurising me but I was the cleaner fighter all night.

"I am ready for a rematch. I am here and I will take it. I knew it would be tough against him in his home town and this is why boxing has not been in Washington DC for 20 years - because you get a decision like that.

"I thought he was going to head-butt me and that is why I pushed him."

Khan's team later announced they will formally question the performance of Cooper as well as "certain ambiguities" in the judges' scoring.

A statement jointly issued by Team Khan and Golden Boy Promotions said they would taking their grievances to the formal channels.

It read: "Following the decision in the fight, Team Khan and Golden Boy Promotions intends to make inquiries with the District of Columbia Boxing and Wrestling Commission, the IBF and the WBA regarding the performance of referee Joseph Cooper and will also be seeking clarification regarding certain ambiguities with respect to the scores of the fight." - http://www.sportinglife.com

Wladimir Klitschko’s fight off after surgery

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko pulled out of his fight against France’s Jean-Marc Mormeck this weekend after two operations in two days to remove a kidney stone.
The fight had been scheduled for Saturday in Duesseldorf. Klitschko’s promoter, Bernd Boente, said Monday that March 3 was a possible new date. The IBF would have to approve because Klitschko would be requested to fight a mandatory challenger on that date.

“We hope to know in two or three days. Mormeck is also ready to accept it,” Boente said, adding that Klitschko was “deeply disappointed” by having to call off the fight.Klitschko, the WBO, IBF and WBA champ, had abdominal pain at his training camp in Austria on Friday. The 35-year-old Ukrainian was taken to Innsbruck for treatment before he was transferred to a Duesseldorf hospital. The stone was removed Saturday, but Klitschko returned to the hospital Sunday before a scheduled television appearance.

Older brother Vitali Klitschko, the WBC champion, appeared on the live program and said Wladimir became ill shortly before the show and returned to Duesseldorf University Hospital.Dr. Peter Albers, the hospital’s chief urologist, said Klitschko was doing well and did not have pain any longer.“But he is very week after two surgeries and it makes no sense to have a fight now,” Albers said. The 39-year-old Mormeck is a former WBC and WBA unified cruiserweight champion. He has won all his fights since moving to the heavyweight division in 2009. He has a career record of 36 wins (22 KOs) and four defeats.Saturday’s fight was supposed to be Klitschko’s 20th title bout and his first appearance since beating Britain’s David Haye in July. His record is 56-3 with 49 KOs-.http://sports.yahoo.com

AMIR KHAN: I'LL NEVER FIGHT PACQUIAO

Amir Khan has re-iterated that he will never fight pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

Khan is mystified by recent speculation that his relationship with Wild Card stablemate Pacquiao had cooled. Those rumours had in turn led to talk the two may lock horns professionally in the future, but again Khan says it just won't happen.

He said: "That fight will never happen. I've always said to Freddie and Manny, Manny knows himself; we won't fight each other. We have too much respect for each other.

"I remember when I moved to the Wild Card Gym, and Manny was a big help bringing me back and also helping me out in stuff and training. We also trained together and this camp (ahead of Khan's fight with Lamont Peterson) we didn't spar together or anything because I have different opponent. Also, I trained a little bit later than Manny.

"But everything was cool. I think these are rumours people make up."

Freddie Roach, who trains both Khan and Pacquiao, backed the Bolton star's stance, saying: "You just heard it. I mean, they're friends and that's the way it is. They have a lot of respect for me and each other, and I don't see it happening. There are a lot of other fights out there and we'll look forward to them."
