Chisora suspended by WBC

Heavyweight hit with "serious fine" and removed from rankings

Dereck Chisora has been banned indefinitely by the World Boxing Council following his conduct before and after his title fight against Vitali Klitschko.

The British heavyweight failed in his bid to take the WBC belt from defending champion Klitschko in Munich on February 18. "The WBC will also take off from the WBC rankings the name of Dereck Chisora and declare an indefinite suspension against fighting again for a WBC title, while demanding Chisora to take an anger management medical treatment after which his suspension will be reconsidered." WBC statement Quotes of the week In the post-fight press conference Chisora became embroiled in a brawl with British rival David Haye, though he was released without charge after being questioned by German police.

The 28-year-old had already courted controversy before the bout by slapping his Ukrainian opponent at the weigh-in. He then spat water at Klitschko's brother Wladimir ahead of the opening bell at the Olympiahalle.

In a statement the WBC declared Chisora had committed "one of the worst behaviours ever by a professional boxer" and said the suspension would not be reconsidered until he had undertaken anger management classes. He has also been hit with a "serious fine", which will be determined later at a hearing, and immediately removed from the WBC's rankings.

Haye claims self-defence

Former champion says Chisora was the aggressor in Munich

David Haye insists he was acting in self-defence when he clashed with Dereck Chisora in Munich last week.

But while the former world heavyweight champion admits he wishes he hadn't gone to the press conference where the fight took place, he said fellow-Brit Chisora was the one to blame for the unseemly brawl.

Chisora has since apologised for his actions, but Haye has not and told That Sunday Night Show he has no desire to fight him in the ring. "He comes over to me, in my face, I feel his knuckles in my face, what am I supposed to do? I've got to close the show," he said.

"Look at all the camera angles. I had no other option. I could have stood there with my hands by my side and got punched, kicked or spat at. The guy has said on national television he is going to beat me up and break my jaw. Why wouldn't I defend myself? "I've got no desire to fight Dereck Chisora inside the ring or outside the ring. He's lost his last three fights." - http://www1.skysports.com/

Warren eyes Cleverly-Hopkins

Welsh world champion could return to action as early as April

Promoter Frank Warren hopes to set Nathan Cleverly up with a big summer bout against Bernard Hopkins in Cardiff.

Welshman Cleverly successfully defended his WBO light-heavyweight title on Saturday night by beating Tommy Karpency on points. Warren would like his next outing to be at London's Royal Albert Hall in April - the venue's first professional boxing bill for 10 years - but a megafight with American veteran Hopkins is where big money could be made.

The Caerphilly fighter, who completely outclassed Karpency in Cardiff en route to a unanimous decision from the judges, has already spoken of his desire to move on to a big unification fight, with the winner of the April 28 WBC title clash between Chad Dawson and Hopkins top of the agenda.

While Warren is looking to put that contest on at the Millennium Stadium or Cardiff City Stadium, he has also revealed he hopes the Welshman will defend his belt in London, also on April 28. Warren said: "Nathan is coming on in leaps and bounds and all our attention will now of course turn to April 28 and the Bernard Hopkins v Chad Dawson fight, then we will be making a big decision about a fight in the summer. "In the meantime I have the Royal Albert Hall booked for April 28. "I don't know if Nathan will be ready for that but I would not mind him being the guy to take boxing back there. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Okami vs Tim Boetsch 2/26 11AM GMT 8

UFC 144 (in Japan): 12BET odds Yushin Okami vs Tim Boetsch 2/26 11AM GMT+8

Okami's style inside the cage is not always the most crowd-pleasing, but he remains one of the most effective fighters in the sport at forcing his game plan onto an opponent. Although his striking at range has improved, and he should hold an edge in this fight in that phase, it remains the weakest aspect of his game. Where Okami prefers to be is in tight. He has good offense from in the clinch, with both strikes and throws, and once on the mat he possesses a smothering top game which he uses to earn TKO's or dominant decisions.

Boetsch is a wrestler who does his best work when he is making fights ugly, dumping opponents to the mat and working ground and pound from on top of them. Where Boetsch has struggled in the past is when faced with opponents who he could not dominate positionally, and as a result was forced to slug it out on the feet, or worse put on his back and forced to work from on bottom. The move down to middleweight has done wonders to prevent that from happening, however in Okami he now faces a massive middleweight on par physically with many light heavyweights who is also an expert in grappling, which could prove troublesome for Boetsch.

Cleverly vows to be model pro

Welsh star Cleverly will aim to set the right example

WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly intends to make headlines for all the right reasons when he faces Tommy Karpency on Saturday.

The shocking press conference brawl in Munich between British rivals Dereck Chisora and David Haye - following the former's defeat to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko - has seen the sport take a pounding in the past few days.

Chisora, who was arrested by German police before being released after questioning, also slapped Klitschko ahead of the bout and spat water in the face of his brother Wladimir, and faces a British Boxing Board of Control hearing into his behaviour next month. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Booth - A shame for the sport

Trainer believes his injury wasn't caused by camera tripod

Adam Booth said that he feels those involved in the brawl between Dereck Chisora and David Haye now regret their actions - and has laughed off the idea that it was all just a publicity stunt.

The two British heavyweights came to blows during the post-match press conference following Chisora's points defeat to Vitali Klitschko. Booth - Haye's former manager and trainer - was left sporting a nasty cut on his head after the fracas on Saturday night in Germany.German police still want to talk to Haye over the incident while Chisora, who was questioned on Sunday before being released, will stand in front of a British Boxing Board of Control hearing on March 14 over his conduct.

When asked if he regretted what went on in Munich, Booth replied: "I think everyone does." "I love our sport. I love the sport of boxing. I believe the sport of boxing is the best sport in the world. Anything that makes boxing look bad is a real shame, because it is such a great sport." He added: "It's a shame it happened. But it did - now we've got to move on."

Some conspiracy theorists suggest the whole incident was pre-planned to build up interest in a potential showdown between the currently-retired Haye, who hung up his gloves last year, and Chisora. However Booth - who has not yet heard from German police but would be happy to speak to them - dismissed that idea with a touch of humour. "I didn't get that memo," he quipped. "If I had, I would have ducked." - http://www1.skysports.com/

Wlad 'shocked and embarrassed'

IBF, WBO and WBA champion left disgusted by Brits' antics

Wladimir Klitschko has called for action to be taken following the Munich brawl between British heavyweights David Haye and Dereck Chisora.

The two men clashed at the post-fight press conference after Chisora lost a unanimous decision to Klitschko's brother Vitali, the WBC champion. Wladimir Klitschko, the IBF, WBO and WBA champion, reiterated his disgust at Saturday night's events, which he witnessed first-hand. "I am shocked and deeply embarrassed by the actions of Dereck Chisora and his team over this past week," he wrote in an open letter.

"It saddens me how he represented the sport of boxing and disrespected the champion of the world Vitali Klitschko at the weigh-in and fight night. "But even more embarrassing and disgraceful to the sport was the post-fight press conference. "With journalists from all over the world in attendance, this same man Dereck Chisora, got into a fight with Adam Booth, the trainer of David Haye, and David Haye himself. "Dereck then promised out loudly multiple times right in front of the press to 'personally SHOOT AND KILL David Haye!!!' - http://www1.skysports.com/

Chisora hit in pocket for slap

British challenger blasted by WBC president for weigh-in slap

Dereck Chisora will reportedly face a hefty fine from the World Boxing Council after his slap to the face of Vitali Klitschko at the weigh-in prior to their heavyweight contest.

In extraordinary scenes in Munich on Friday, Chisora caught everyone by surprise as he struck out at the Ukrainian champion after the two came together for a traditional stare-down. His actions drew criticism not only from Klitschko - who claimed the move demonstrated the Briton's "nervousness" - but also from his own trainer Don Charles who branded his charge's behaviour as "unacceptable".

But Chisora's cheap shot is now likely to end up hurting his own wallet with WBC president Jose Sulaiman understood to be ready to fine the challenger $50,000 (£31,500).

"This is definitely a lack of respect for the sport and completely unacceptable," Sulaiman told www.boxingscene.com. "It was a cheap shot and my message is that there is a fine so he'll [Chisora] feel it. "He's no gentleman at all and he's failed in what we expect from boxers. "He wanted Vitali to lose control but Vitali will make him pay for this in the ring, definitely." - http://www1.skysports.com/

Vitali - Chisora better than Haye

WBC heavyweight champion expects tough night on Saturday

Vitali Klitschko believes Dereck Chisora will put up a better fight against him on Saturday than David Haye managed against his brother Wladimir last summer.

Haye's feud with the dominant Klitschko siblings appears no closer to a conclusion with Vitali admitting they are "miles apart" in negotiations to meet in the ring. The Briton has already squandered one opportunity, losing his WBA heavyweight title ignominiously to IBF/WBO champion Wladimir in Hamburg last July. This weekend, Haye's fellow Londoner Chisora attempts to snatch Vitali's WBC belt at Munich's Olympiahalle. Few give Chisora, 28, much of a chance, but Klitschko has been quick to talk up his challenger's credentials and backed the Zimbabwe-born Briton to at least put up a decent fight. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Diego Sanchez vs Jake Ellenberger 2/16 10AM GMT 8

UFC (in Omaha, NE): 12BET odds Diego Sanchez vs Jake Ellenberger 2/16 10AM GMT+8

Sanchez out to shake Jake

'The Nightmare' ready to take Ellenberger opportunity

Diego Sanchez is targeting a hat-trick of UFC victories when he takes on Jake Ellenberger at UFC on Fuel, knowing a win could put him in the Welterweight title picture.

The 30-year-old has come off the back of two spectacular 'Fight of the Night' successes against Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann and is confident of beating the highly-rated Ellenberger and cementing his position as a threat to interim Welterweight champion Carlos Condit.

Many consider Ellenberger as a future champion and although he is seen as the underdog in this encounter, Sanchez believes he can give a good account of himself. He told UFC.com: "I know that on February 15th when they lock the door and it's just me and Jake in there, nothing that I will have said will matter, and it's just going to be me and him in there. "I know that once that 15 minutes is over, I'm going to walk out and be able to say I gave it everything that I had." - http://www1.skysports.com/

SHANE MOSLEY HANDED TITLE SHOT

Cash-strapped veteran Shane Mosley has been handed another big pay-day after being matched with WBC light-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez.

Mosley will be giving away almost 20 years to the young tyro when the pair meet on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather v Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand on May 5. The American is winless in three years and was last seen in a ponderous 12-round beating at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, when Mosley looked way past his best. Alvarez, by contrast, remains unbeaten in 40 contests at the age of just 21 and has once again been cutely matched by Golden Boy Promotions - the youngster's last six opponents all being at least 10 years his senior. - http://www.sportinglife.com/

Ronny Markes vs Aaron Simpson 2/16 9AM GMT 8

UFC (in Omaha, NE): 12BET odds Ronny Markes vs Aaron Simpson 2/16 9AM GMT+8

Simpson was a two-time All-American at Arizona State, and as such is a very talented wrestler who has adapted those skills for use inside the Octagon. As with Miocic in the bout before this, Simpson uses his wrestling primarily as a defensive tool. While Simpson isn’t a pure boxer, he is more than capable of landing more than he is hit on the feet, and has power in his fists, having earned six of his victories by way of knock out. Simpson also showed in his victory over Brad Tavares that he will not hesitate to switch to a grinding style if he feels his opponent poses a threat on the feet.

Markes does his best work when fighting at close quarters, where the strong fighter is able to boss his opponents around to find his way into dominant positions and hammer away on his opponents, sapping their strength as he goes. Against an accomplished wrestler like Simpson, this may prove difficult sledding, however if Markes is able to impose his will upon Simpson, and keep out of a middle-of-the-cage slugfest, he should be effective working on top of the wrestler.

Nurse no match for Anwar

Leeds fighter now hoping to get a shot at the British title

Adil Anwar claimed the second edition of Prizefighter - the light-welterweights division with a unanimous points victory over Tyrone Nurse. The two Yorkshire fighters, who had actually sparred together in the past, had both impressively reached the final with some slick, counter-attacking boxing in the eight-man knockout event. However, Huddersfield's Nurse decided on a change of tactics in the final, opting instead to go on the front foot and try to hunt down his rival. All the change did, though, was play perfectly into Anwar's hands at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton. The 24-year-old from Leeds used his languid style to land the more obvious blows, including appearing to wobble his rival late on in the third round with a lightning-fast flurry, as he clinched a comfortable win on the scorecards. He got the nod 30-27, 30-28, 29-28 from the three judges at ringside, clinching him the silver trophy and a cheque for £32,000. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Khan-Peterson rematch confirmed

British fighter gets another crack after controversial points defeat

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer revealed to Sky Sports News HD that Amir Khan's rematch with Lamont Peterson will take place in Las Vegas on May 19. Peterson took the WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles in controversial circumstances in the first meeting of the pair on December 10 in Washington, with his opponent twice deducted a point by referee Joseph Cooper, who also opted not to score an early knockdown in Khan's favour, for pushing.Khan appealed against the outcome and the WBA confirmed in January that they wanted their new champion to defend the belt against the Brit. The saga continued when Peterson lodged "a comprehensive written appeal" of his own against the WBA's decision. But Schaefer has now confirmed he has received a signed contract from Peterson for a rematch and the duo will get the chance to settle their differences in the ring at the Mandalay Bay Hotel."We have a deal, we are all set," Schaefer told Sky Sports News HD. "This is going to be a big fight, and I mean a very, very big fight. "The first fight was a terrific, all-action fight. There was a lot of controversy and questions surrounding this fight

Tyson Fury vacates British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles

Tyson Fury has vacated his British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles after a proposed bout with English champion David Price fell through.
Fury's promoter Mick Hennessy claimed Price's camp rejected £100,000 to fight his man, who is unbeaten in 17 bouts.
"If David Price really believed he could beat me, the smart move would have been to take the great payday to appear on terrestrial TV," said Fury.
Unbeaten Price won the English title in his last fight against John McDermott.
Fury, 23, added: "I'm really excited about my future plans as I'm doing things differently and currently training like a Trojan in pursuit of becoming heavyweight champion of the world.

Tyson Fury
"It's been an honour to have won and held both the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles, but as I'm now currently number seven in the world it's time to move on."
On his company's website, Hennessy said  : "We have a great schedule in place for Tyson on Channel 5 and I'm not prepared to have that affected by other promoters, purse bids and titles.
"Fury versus Price was a quality fight and, in my opinion, it should go out to the widest possible audience. That's why I offered David Price £100,000 to fight Tyson Fury on Channel 5, which unfortunately was rejected by his promoter on Monday.
"Tyson's next steps and further information will be announced over the next few days."
However, Price's promoter Frank Maloney claimed that Hennessey's camp did not want the fight.
"Boxing is all about money," he said. "I believe Tyson Fury will regret turning this fight down.
"As a promoter you take a risk when it comes to purse bids, you can bid too high and make a massive loss or too low and stand the chance that your fighter will fight on another promotion and TV channel.
"The BBBofC [British Boxing Board of Control] have purse bids for a reason and this fight generated more interest than normal with all the top promoters in the UK bidding for it.
"This is a real disappointment for us all. A show that all heavyweight boxing fans wanted to see gets taken away before any chance of a bid was accepted."
Maloney added: "He [Price] will definitely fight for the vacant British and Commonwealth titles in his next fight."
The British Boxing Board of Control had called for purse offers to be submitted to their offices in Cardiff on Wednesday for the fight, a mandatory defence of both titles.
In a statement  the board's secretary Robert Smith confirmed: "Prior to purse bids being opened today, Mr Tyson Fury relinquished the British heavyweight championship.
"The British Boxing Board of Control will consider the status of the championship later today."
Fury won the titles on points in July 2011 against Dereck Chisora, whose next fight is against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on 18 February.
His last fight was a defence of his Commonwealth heavyweight title in November when he stopped Neven Pajkic in round three in Manchester.
Liverpool's Price, 28, needed only 73 seconds to beat experienced opponent John McDermott in January to claim the English heavyweight title.
Price, who is unbeaten in 12 pro fights, had McDermott down three times before the fight was called to a halt.

Alex Ferguson's gangster pose

Alex Ferguson shows that he is, as suspected a big man both on road and in the ends, by doing something absolutely sick with his hands next to Falkirk striker Farid El Alagui.

Alex Ferguson with Farid El Alagui

It's not every day that Sir Alex Ferguson takes time out from his busy schedule of not doing press conferences and pointing to his wristwatch to pose with a player from the Scottish second tier.
That's exactly what has happened above, with wonderful results.
You rarely never see Fergie display his street credentials, but here with Falkirk's Farid El Alagui we are reminded that Fergie is Straight Outta Govan, and not averse to throwing some pure gangsta signs with his fingers.
After an exhaustive seven minute search online we've failed to work out what on earth is going on in the photo, but suspect it's got something to do with Kicking Respect Back Into the Game or something similarly nebulous.
