 THE LATEST UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NEWS – Chelsea defender John Terry, who recently came out of the controversial racist abuse issue against QPR’s Anton Ferdinand that cost him punishments from the FA, will have to wear an armband on anti-racism if he is chosen to captain his side against Shakhtar Donetsk in their next Champions League match.

Chelsea, which played past through rival teams last season to win the Champions League, announced that Terry will be available to play for the side in the European top-club competition. The anti-racism armband, required for all club captains playing in the competition, is part of a campaign led by Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE).

Premier League champions Manchester City will visit their Eredivisie counterparts Ajax for their third UEFA Champions League Group D fixture. The match will be a highly important one for both sides, as they fill the bottom portion of arguably the most difficult group in the league – City being third with one point from a draw and a loss and Ajax being last with zero points from two losses.

Evading defeat will be the main objective of Ajax and Manchester City in the match. Both are currently unbeaten in their domestic leagues this season, although their current standings in the Champions League reflect that they are both struggling to succeed in the group stage.

City have not yet played past through rival Dutch side Ajax yet, although they fare better as favourites in the Champions League with one draw from their match against Borussia Dortmund. Redskins lose Brian Orakpo, Adam Carriker for season (and other NFL injury updates)

Following Sunday night's action, Shutdown Corner took a quick look at the key injuries coming out of Week 2 that we would be monitoring in Week 3. Below is an update on those ailments and how the teams will adjust without those players.

As painful as their 31-28 loss to the St. Louis Rams was, the Washington Redskins were dealt a bigger blow when it was determined on Monday that defensive end Adam Carriker (torn quad tendon) and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo (left pectoral) would miss the remainder of the 2012 season. A former first-round bust of the Rams, Carriker was coming off a career-year with the Redskins, posting 5.5 sacks and signing a four-year, $20 million contract in March.

Orakpo, a two-time Pro Bowler with 29.5 career sacks, reinjured the same pectoral muscle he had surgery on during the offseason. According to official playing-time documents, Orakpo rarely came off the field during his first three-plus seasons in the NFL, logging between 85 and 92 percent of the team's defensive snaps. The Redskins will rely on Rob Jackson and Chris Wilson to replace Orakpo at right outside linebacker, which should allow their opponents to focus on left outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan.

To replace Carriker and Orakpo on the 53-man roster, the Redskins promoted Doug Worthingtonfrom the practice squad and signed linebacker Markus White off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad. White went to training camp with the Redskins and, according to the NFLPA salary database, had been earning an elevated salary of $299,999 ($17,647 per week) while on the Buccaneers' practice squad, well above the $5,700 per week minimum. By signing White off another team's practice squad, the Redskins have guaranteed the 2011 seventh-round pick out of Florida State three game checks ($82,059), regardless of whether or not he remains on the active roster during that time.

Rams left tackle Rodger Saffold suffered a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will miss at least four weeks. Saffold was injured while attempting to advance a fumble by quarterback Sam Bradford that was forced by Orakpo, who had beaten Saffold for his first, and ultimately only sack of the season. Wayne Hunter is expected to replace Saffold at left tackle.

The Philadelphia Eagles lost starting center Jason Kelce to a season-ending knee injury. A 2011 sixth-round pick out of Cincinnati, Kelce had earned the starting job as a rookie, playing in all but six snaps last season. In the Eagles' 24-23 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Kelce tore his medial collateral ligament and partially tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The Eagles placed Kelce on the season-ending version of the injured reserve list, elevating Dallas Reynolds to a starting role and signing journeyman Steve Vallos to fill Kelce's spot on the 53-man roster.

Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin exited the win over the Ravens with a hip contusion. On Monday, head coach Andy Reid said that Maclin would miss Wednesday's practice but was not ready to rule him out for this Sunday's game against the 2-0 Arizona Cardinals.

New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw (neck) and right tackle David Diehl (knee) exited Sunday's 41-34 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bradshaw and Diehl have not practiced this week and are in jeopardy of missing Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks remains slowed by an offseason foot injury, but is expected to play against the Panthers.

As mentioned earlier on Tuesday by our own Doug Farrar, the New England Patriots will be without tight end Aaron Hernandez — reportedly for the next six weeks -- and are turning to free agent Kellen Winslow. While Winslow can fill some of the roles Hernandez played in New England's offense, a major question mark about the short-term stop-gap is will Winslow's knee allow him to practice enough to learn those roles and develop any kind of rapport with Tom Brady. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to manage Winslow and the Seattle Seahawks kept the veteran on a pitch count during the offseason and training camp.

Speaking of the Seahawks, tight end Zach Miller (foot) and wide receiver Sidney Rice (knee) are expected to play in next Monday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks could also get left tackle Russell Okung back from a bone bruise on his knee that pressed Frank Omiyale into service in Seattle's 27-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles reinjured his left knee against the Buffalo Bills and will miss this Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, head coach Romeo Crennel announced on Monday.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert's hamstring injury turned out to be more of an issue with a gluteus maximus muscle, Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union reports. Gabbert is expected to start against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Sergio Martinez taken to Hospital after Julio Cesar Chavez fight! Serious Injuries!

It is being reported by various sources that after Sergio Martinez's 12 round unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Martinez had to go to the hospital over injuries he sustained in the

bout. The injuries sound pretty serious. Read on....

According to Martinez's Boxing Promoter, Lou Dibella, Martinez went to the hospital and has suffered a broken left hand and a tear in his right knee. All I can say is ouch, especially after watching the magnificent fight that both he and Chavez put on.

Talk about heart. I really enjoyed the fight, and knowing now that Martinez fought through a broken hand and torn knee... well talk about a warrior! Those are serious injuries! I am not a doctor, but I will say the torn knee alone could be a retirement kind of injury... and a broken hand is a serious injury for any boxer. Most boxers would probably have quit on their stool...but not Martinez! Injuries and all, he fought like a true Superstar Champion.

Both Martinez and Chavez really put on a great show. Although Martinez did dominate, Chavez never stopped coming and was always in the game. Chavez played his role in ensuring it was a fun scrap to watch. It was the kind of fight that reminds me why the hell I love boxing so much.

Olympic Games - Day 1 review from London

An excellent first day’s boxing at the XXX Olympiad here at London’s ExCeL Centre ended with India’s Chungneijang Mery Kom Hmangte, better known as Mary Kom , being the ‘star’ of the show. The five times World AIBA Pinweight (46 kg) Champion had moved up two weights to enable her to take part in this historic event and many wondered if she could reproduce her form of yesteryear for surely nothing else would suffice in a tournament that included such as Cancan Ren of China, GB’s Nikki Adams and Russia’s 2010 AIBA and 2011 European Champion, Elena Savelyeva.
 

Well now we know. Mary Kom was greeted with rapturous applause, not only from the large Indian support but from fans of women boxing irrespective of nationality. She faced off against Poland’s talented Karolina Michalczuk, for many years, one of Europe’s elite boxers. The first round was shared, Kom edged the second thanks mainly to a couple of good hooks. All of the telling blows came from the Indian legend. She gradually took control and eased out a deserved 19:14 victor.

A visibly emotional Mary Kom said later : ““This is a fantastic day, it is unbelievable for me to be here, very special. I have been fighting twelve years to get to this point, to be at the Olympic Games. It has been my life-long ambition to get here. My victory is very emotional because not only as am I finally here but it is also my twins’ fifth birthday today and I am missing it. This win is a gift to them”.

Earlier on Sunday, WBAN brought you a comprehensive report on the defeat of leading American hope, Quanitta ‘Queen’ Underwood at the hands of Great Britain’s Natasha Jonas. In Europe it had been widely felt for most of the past year that Underwood was not quite the boxer she was back in 2010 when she fought a gallant fight against Katie Taylor and only narrowly lost. Defeats in the United States and Canada raised some doubts, indeed many experts felt that she was lucky to have gained the verdict over Michaela Mayer at the U.S trials in Spokane.

Her loss to Ingrid Egner at the recent world championships in China served but to further fuel the belief that she would not be a major threat in these Games - and so it came to pass since Jonas was a very clear cut and deserving winner here and now moves on to face Ireland’s Katie Taylor on Tuesday. Jonas was pretty impressive Sunday but Taylor offers a very different challenge than Underwood. Jonas has never defeated the Bray native, losing 6:3 the last time they met at the Strandja Cup in Bulgaria. Her thoughts on that bout: “"We boxed and I gave her a bit too much respect, because at the time I was quite new on the international scene and I was a bit in awe. But times have changed and I'm 50 bouts on from then, so next time it'll be different."

Jonas is looking forward to Monday’s bout with Taylor (2.30pm local UK) : "If you want to be Olympic champion there's not going to be any easy bouts and Katie's a great performer, world champion – she's class. I know her strengths, she knows my strengths, so hopefully the best person will win on the day but I'm going to be ready."

Underwood’s thoughts, are covered more fully in our earlier feature by Julie Goldsticker but will she be supporting Jonas the British media wondered : “I’ll support Katie Taylor in my weight class because I’m not in it anymore. I was looking forward to that rematch. I wanted to get in there with her. That was really my motivation for this fight. It wasn’t the gold yet, it was to get to that rematch with Katie Taylor but now I get to cheer her on, I know she’s gonna bring home the gold.”

“I’m going to keep fighting but I got here to the Olympics this time. “I don’t think it’s in me to stick around for four years. I did what I had to do, I waited around for four years for it to be an Olympic sport. I think it’s time for me to move on to a new chapter in my life. Now, its time to focus on something else.”

LONDON -- An boxing referee from Turkmenistan was expelled from the London Olympics on Thursday for his handling of a bout in which the result was overturned on appeal.

Boxing's governing federation, known as AIBA, released a statement saying referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov "is on his way back home."

The federation also suspended German referee Frank Scharmach five days for his decision to disqualify an Iranian heavyweight, and expelled technical official Aghajan Abiyev of Azerbaijan.

"I deeply regret that we had to take these decisions," AIBA President Wu Ching-Kuo said. "However, our main concern has been and will always be the protection of the integrity and fair play of our competitions. I will take all possible steps to reinforce this."

Both sanctioned referees made unusual decisions during Wednesday night's card.

In a bantamweight bout, Magomed Abdulhamidov of Azerbaijan fell to the canvas six times in the third round against Satoshi Shimizu of Japan, yet still won a 22-17 decision.

Meretnyyazov allowed the fight to continue after each tumble, and he enraged the Japanese team by fixing the headgear worn by Abdulhamidov, who had to be helped from the ring after winning.

AIBA overturned the result late Wednesday night, saying Meretnyyazov should have counted at least three knockdowns and stopped the bout.

Iranian heavyweight Ali Mazaheri was disqualified in his bout with Cuba's Jose Larduet after several warnings for holding from Scharmach, who finally waved off the fight midway through the second round.

The stoppage seemed quick to the booing crowd, and Mazaheri, who stood with his arms outstretched and eventually left the ring without shaking hands with Larduet or Scharmach. Mazaheri claimed the result was "a fix" and "a setup."

Scharmach is suspended through Tuesday's Olympic fights, but the disqualification stands.

The federation did not specify what Abiyev had done to earn expulsion, saying only that he had committed "a number of breaches" of its code of conduct.

International technical officials aren't referees or judges, but perform numerous duties around the ring during competition regarding everything from the draw to medical rulings and equipment management.

The offer is understood to be under consideration, with Wolves waiting to see whether Aston Villa decide to firm up their interest in the 25-year-old.

No Sunderland striker reached double figures in the goal tally last season, with Bendtner and Stephane Sessegnon the top-scorers with eight.

“We know where the problem is. You just need to look at our scoring record last season,” O’Neill said last week. “This puts pressure on other players to score, either from set-pieces or midfield.

“Eventually centre-forwards have to weigh in and, at the moment, you would want to know who and when someone is going to score 15 goals in a Premier League season.”
