Mares beats Agbeko, keeps bantam belt in rematch

ANAHEIM, California (AP)—Abner Mares beat Joseph Agbeko by unanimous decision Saturday night to retain his IBF bantamweight belt in a rematch of their controversial bout four months ago.

The Mexican fighter won 118-110 on all three judges’ scorecards to maintain his unbeaten record of 23-0-1, with 13 knockouts.

Mares was awarded a majority-decision victory over Agbeko in August, but he landed several blatantly low blows on the Ghanaian during the bout without being penalized by the official. The IBF ordered an immediate rematch.

The rematch featured almost no questionable blows. Mares landed more total punches and power shots despite fighting the final 10 rounds with a deep cut near his right eye from a punch. The Associated Press scored it 116-112 for Mares.

“I’m happy that my fans finally saw my true boxing skills,” Mares said. “I beat him the first time, and I beat him again. I knew I was winning the whole fight.”In the co-main event, Panama’s Anselmo Moreno kept his WBA bantamweight belt in his American debut, winning a unanimous decision over Vic Darchinyan, an Armenian-born Australian.Moreno could be Mares’ next opponent, said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.Mares was a bit sharper and crisper than Agbeko, whose entourage still raised him on its shoulders after the final bell. HATTON HAS HIGH HOPES FOR MURRAY

Promoter Ricky Hatton believes Martin Murray can become his first world champion when the unbeaten St Helens fighter challenges Felix Sturm for the WBA middleweight title on Friday night.

Murray, 29, takes on German superstar Sturm in Mannheim rated as the rank outsider.

He will aim to go one better than domestic rival Matthew Macklin managed in June, when the Birmingham boxer looked to have beaten Sturm over 12 rounds only to lose a controversial decision.

And Hatton, whose promotional venture continues to grow at an impressive rate, believes Murray can provide a landmark victory.

The popular former two-weight world champion said: "I feel Martin Murray can become my first world champion.

"Apart from his obvious talent he's in his prime, hungry, fresh with very few miles on the clock. This is the right fight at the right time."

Sturm (36-2-1, 15KO wins) represents a daunting challenge on home turf, particularly against a fighter as inexperienced as Murray (23-0, 10KOs).

But the British and Commonwealth champion - who only won the domestic belt in his last fight - believes he can exploit holes in Sturm's armour.

"I watched Sturm's defence against Macklin and made it a draw," he said.

Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito II is a Boxing Super Welterweight fight for the WBA Super World Super Welterweight championship. The bout is going to be held on December 3, 2011, at Madison Square Garden, in New York City, United States. Both teams reached an agreement on the contract weight for their rematch: 153 pounds. When Cotto and Margarito met in 2008, they waged their memorable welterweight title bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The rationale for the denial was not due the cheating allegations, but instead due to the damage to Margarito's eye in the Manny Pacquiao fight. An appeal was filed and a hearing took place to where several leading eye doctors testified that Margarito should be allowed to fight. A final decision is expected on November 18, 2011. Without a license, Margarito cannot fight in the state of New York.Several major figures have received criticism for this actions surrounding this fight. NYSAC chairwoman Melvina Lathan was in attendance when the fight was announced, potentially indicating that the NYSAC supported the fight. In addition, Bob Arum and Top Rank did not give an indication that the fight may not occur at Madison Square Garden when promoting the fight, causing fans to nearly sellout Madison Square Garden with 2 weeks remaining before the fight as well as spend money on flights, hotels, etc. Plus, there is criticism that the license issue is not to be resolved until 2 weeks before the fight.

As an amateur, Mares compiled a record of 112-8 with 84 KOs. Mares won the U17 world championships and the bantamweight gold medal at the Central American games 2002 beating Juan Manuel López and the silver medal in the same division in 2003 at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. At the junior world championships 2004 he finished second losing to Aibek Abdimomunov. He participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native country. There he was beaten in the first round of the Bantamweight (54 kg) division by Hungary's Zsolt Bedák in a highly controversial decision.


On December 11, 2010, Agbeko was given the chance to regain his IBF title when he took on Yonnhy Pérez in the semi-finals of the Showtime Bantamweight tournament, which was televised live from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington. Rather than brawling as he had done in his first fight with Pérez, Agbeko chose to use his boxing skills and stiff jab to cruise to a unanimous decision victory, with the judges scoring it 116-112, 117-111 and 115-113. Also on the card was Abner Mares, who defeated Vic Darchinyan via split-decision to advance to the finals and a showdown with Agbeko.
