Nathan Cleverly rejects any expectation to put on a show in his homecoming fight against Tommy Karpency at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena on February 25. It will be the first time unbeaten Cleverly has fought on home soil since being crowned WBO light-heavyweight champion last year. Rather than seeking to dazzle the expected 5,000 sell-out crowd, the 24-year-old from Cefn Fforest is taking a professional approach to the occasion. The unheralded Karpency has lost two of his 24 fights, but Cleverly is treating him with respect. UNIMPRESSIVE QUIGG RETAINS TITLE

Points win for Chavez

Champion rarely troubled in front of big crowd in Texas




Julio Cesar Chavez won a unanimous decision over fellow Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio to retain his WBC middleweight title in Texas. The judges scored the bout 118-110, 116-112, 115-113 in favour of Chavez to a mixed reaction from the 14,210-strong crowd at San Antonio's Alamodome. Neither fighter managed a knockdown despite trading heavy blows to the head and body for the duration of the 12-round contest. Chavez was the dominant man throughout, with Rubio only really suggesting he could pull off an unlikely win in the sixth. But even then, Chavez finished the round with a good flurry of blows and then started to use his weight to wear down his opponent in the seventh, with a good exchange on the ropes bringing the crowd briefly to life. Quigg hits back to defend title

Scott Quigg climbed off the floor to defend the British super-bantamweight title and maintain his unbeaten record with an eighth-round stoppage of Jamie Arthur in Bolton on Saturday. A cut appeared close to Arthur's right eye in the seventh and referee Mark Green stepped in to stop the contest after 35 seconds of the eighth when the Wales-based veteran spun away and briefly turned his back after Quigg found the target with a left hook to the body. Mayweather to face Cotto

'Money' steps up in weight to challenge Cotto



Floyd Mayweather will challenge Miguel Cotto for his WBA light-middleweight title in Las Vegas on May 5.

The fight at the MGM Grand ends immediate hopes of Mayweather facing Manny Pacquiao - although that fight may still be made after Mayweather has served an 87-day prison sentence for a domestic violence conviction.

Mayweather's sentence was deferred by Las Vegas authorities in order for him to take on Cotto, who has held his current title since he was defeated on points by Pacquiao in 2009.

Cotto proved in his last fight, a revenge stoppage win over Antonio Margarito in December, that - Pacquiao apart - he represents the biggest threat to Mayweather's 42-fight unbeaten record.

Mayweather said: "Miguel Cotto is a world-class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing.

"It will be a challenge for me to compete with him at this weight, but this is the type of test I thrive on and gives me the motivation to train even harder. I have no doubt in my mind that my title belt collection will increase once again."

Mayweather last fought at the 154lbs limit when he outpointed Oscar De La Hoya in a disputed split decision in 2007. In his last fight in September he scored a controversial fourth round stoppage of Victor Ortiz.

BERTO-ORTIZ CLASH CALLED OFF

Andre Berto has been forced to call off his highly-anticipated clash with Victor Ortiz after suffering a serious injury in training.



Berto (28-1 22KOs) ruptured his biceps while sparring and may be forced to undergo surgery this week, meaning the clash scheduled for February 11 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is now off.

Reports suggest Berto hurt his arm throwing a hook to the head of sparring partner Tureano Johnson and it is not clear how long it will take him to recover.

The first fight between the two last April saw both of them visit the canvas, before 25-year-old Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KOs) secured a unanimous points decision victory to take Berto's WBC welterweight belt.

It set him up for the biggest fight of his career against Floyd Mayweather last September, but Ortiz was stopped in the fourth round.

Homecoming for Bellew

British champion to make his comeback in Liverpool

Tony Bellew will defend his British light-heavyweight title against Norwich's Danny McIntosh in Liverpool on April 14.

Bellew suffered the first defeat of his career when he challenged for Nathan Cleverly's WBO strap in October, losing on two of the scorecards.
But he will be looking to impress on his return to the ring against 31-year-old McIntosh, who also lost to then-British and Commonwealth champ Cleverly in 2009.
"I feel I'm at world level now," he said. "Nathan Cleverly is a world-class fighter and in a lot of people's eyes I beat Cleverly, and I showed a lot of good tools that people maybe didn't expect.
"Danny's a good European-level fighter but I feel I'm a world-class fighter."
Promoter Dave Coldwell added: "It's a pleasure to put on a big show like this for Liverpool, Tony Bellew is now one of the game's biggest names.
"He has been pushed to the forefront of British boxing after his fight with Nathan Cleverly and is defending his British title against a very dangerous opponent."
