Newcastle Knights v Wests Tigers

Hunter Stadium, Newcastle, Monday 5pm (GMT+8:00)
Last meeting:
Round 13 2011 - Tigers 17 bt Knights 16 at Leichhardt Oval
Head-to-head:
Knights 7 Tigers 9
Referees: Gerard Sutton/Phil Haines
TV:
Live, FoxSports 2
TAB Sportsbet:
Knights $2.63 Tigers $1.43

Greg Prichard writes: The Knights are in all sorts of trouble. They lost two in a row before their first bye, and then lost three straight coming out of it. Now they are coming out of their second bye. The Tigers won seven in a row before losing to the Roosters last weekend, when captain Robbie Farah was a late withdrawal following his mother’s death. Expect the Tigers to be very hard to beat here.
AAP writes: The Knights are experiencing one of the toughest periods in their proud history and a win any way they can get it will be a godsend. But they, including coach Wayne Bennett, look clueless as how to achieve that. The Tigers will be highly motivated to put a tough week behind them with an emphatic win and that will move Bennett closer to an almost unthinkable wooden spoon.

Key: Robbie Farah. The grieving hooker has asked to play but a final decision on his availability will be made closer to kick-off.

Germany vs. Greece

GDANSK, Poland -- Germany's most prominent fan will be in the stands for the quarterfinal against Greece at the European Championship.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, however, wins no popularity contests among the Greek contingent. So the political dimension of Friday's game only heightens what is already an intriguing match in strictly soccer terms.Germany is a three-time champion. Greece is the surprise winner of the 2004, and the Greeks are still standing again, with an unexpected place in the knockout stages.

It was always our main aim to reach the quarterfinals. So now we have nothing to lose," said defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, one of the many Greece players with Bundesliga experience. "We are playing against one of the best teams here. All I can say is that we'll fight. If we get the win, that would be a huge result."

Greece has plenty of reason to be thankful to Germany - the 2004 championship team was coached by a German, Otto Rehhagel.

German and Greek officials are trying to play down the politics. Germany, Europe's biggest economy, has been a major contributor to international bailouts for Greece and was instrumental in demanding structural reforms and hugely unpopular spending cuts in return. Greek fans are unlikely to take kindly to Merkel's presence at Gdansk Arena.

"We are playing for our shirt, our flag and for the people back home," midfielder Costas Katsouranis said.

Added Greek forward Dimitris Salpigidis: "I don't think anyone on the team believes this will be our last game at this tournament. People have so many problems in their everyday lives. We're really hoping that we can put a smile on their face."

Gdansk also was also the scene of the first battle of World War II, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. A German soccer federation delegation laid a wreath Wednesday at a memorial for Poles at the Westerplatte peninsula on the outskirts of the Baltic city.

Germany has two Poland-born players in its squad, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, and Polish fans could throw their support behind the Germans. By winning its group, Germany got to stay in Gdansk and was spared having to travel.

Merkel attended Germany's 4-0 rout of Argentina at the 2010 World Cup and saw Germany beat Turkey in Berlin in the most important Euro 2012 qualifier for her team. She has visited the German locker room and briefly spent time with the team in Gdansk before the tournament.

"She seems to bring us luck," midfielder Sami Khedira said.

Germany is the only team to have won all three group games and goes into the quarterfinal as the overwhelming favorite. But the Germans understand the ability of the Greeks."They are a very good team, underestimated by many.

They create few chances but score from them. Technically, they are strong and play well one-on-one," Khedira said.

"It will be tough to crack their defense, but we have the means. We have to be patient, but we also have to be constantly on the move. They will try to disrupt our game and beat us, but they will not succeed."

Added midfielder Thomas Mueller: "We know what we have to do, but it's not going to be a piece of cake."

Greece will be missing playmaker and captain Giorgos Karagounis because of suspension.

There is speculation Germany coach Joachim Loew will return Klose to the starting lineup, although Mario Gomez scored three goals that won matches against Portugal and the Netherlands. Klose, a 34-year-old striker, scored the last time these teams played each other, a World Cup qualifier in 2001.

Six Greece players have either played or still play in the Bundesliga.

Greece has five defeats and three draws in the eight games it has played Germany or the former West Germany."We are not too bothered about statistics. ...

That doesn't really matter," Salpigidis said.

Galaxy topples RSL as Donovan leads comeback

Landon Donovan propelled the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 3-2 comeback win over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday at Rio Tinto Stadium as he scored two goals and assisted on another.

The hosts dominated the early part of the match and took a two-goal lead in the first 25 minutes with goals from Kyle Beckerman and Alvaro Saborio.

But the Galaxy chipped away at the lead and Donovan netted the first of his two goals shortly before the half-hour mark, while he set up the equalizer for Mike Magee five minutes after the break.

And the U.S. international kept going, scoring in the 68th minute to put his team in front, allowing the Galaxy to claim a second successive win following a three-game losing streak.

RSL entered the match on a seven-game unbeaten run, and it sure looked like that streak would continue based on the first 25 minutes of play.

Fabian Espindola was causing plenty of problems for the L.A. defense and he set up the first goal after nine minutes by pulling the ball back for Beckerman to finish from six yards.

David Beckham went close with a free kick in the 22nd minute, but Salt Lake doubled its advantage two minutes later as Espindola's low cross was redirected past goalkeeper Josh Saunders by Saborio.

The comeback started in the 29th minute when RSL defender Tony Beltran handed Donovan a goal with a terrible back pass that allowed him to cut in front of goalkeeper Nick Rimando and roll the ball into the empty net.

Magee and Donovan combined well in the second half and teamed up on the equalizer in the 50th minute with Donovan playing Magee into the area, where he rolled a shot past Rimando and inside the far post.

Donovan went from provider to scorer in the 68th after a well-weighted ball from Magee in midfield drew Rimando off his line. But Donovan got to it first and rounded the 'keeper, rolling home the go-ahead goal with ease.

Substitute Javier Morales nearly became the hero in stoppage time for RSL, but his shot from inside the area just managed to sail over the crossbar.

Knockout joy for Barby

BARBY have won the Northamptonshire section of the National Village Knockout for the second year in a row after defeating Middleton Cheney by 56 runs on Sunday.
The start was delayed at the BCG in order to allow the outfield to dry following overnight rain but when the action did begin, Barby but were put in after losing the toss.
The pitch proved damp and slow following all of the recent rain and scoring was slow as a result.
Barby's innings was held together by Rob Field's excellent 80 as he stayed in the middle for the majority of the home side's overs.
It appeared the visitors were getting on top at 50-2 after 20 overs but Field came to the fore and aided by some big hitting from Tom Gleghorn (25) and Joel Gleghorn (18no) helped push the final total to 172-6. Neil Hillman was the pick of the Middleton Cheney attack with 2-26.
Bikran Singh (3-20) picked up three quick wickets at the start of the visitor's reply but Middleton Cheney dug deep and rebuilt through Matt Stevens (32) and Neil Hillman (18).
However, in the space of two overs Phil Beagley (2-25) removed Stevens and Adam Shay (3-28) dismissed Hillman.
That saw Barby take control and wickets fell steadily from that point with the last one going with the total on 116. Two late wickets for Dan Dury saw the end of a competitive but sporting contest.
Barby now move on to a home draw with the winners of the Leicestershire section on July 1.
Saturday's trip to Atherstone Town was rained off but the 2nds did see some action in the reverse fixture, winning by five wickets.
Having been put in, Atherstone's opener Manny Alcock proved the pick of the batsmen has he made 33 but he struggled to find support.
With several rain breaks also disrupting Atherstone, they were dismissed for 101 as Tom Middleton (5-37) and Stev Stipanovic (4-21) proved the pick of the attack. Adam Shay took the other wicket to fall.
Barby looked to be heading to an easy win in reply with Liam Perryman (22) and Nigel Hancock batting well.
However, Hancock suffered what at first looked like a career threatening injury and had to limp off. That led to a couple of quick wickets and Barby were struggling at 50-4.
Shay hit a steadying knock of 22, supported by a dogged 13no from Phil Beagley, before being run out. That led to Hancock (23no) hobbling back onto the pitch and both him and Barby limped over the line at 102-5.

McCaw errors overshadow high workrate

Stats guru Tracey Nelson crunches the numbers from the second test between the All Blacks and Ireland.
The three point winning margin in this game equals the second-closest winning margin in test matches between New Zealand and Ireland (24-21 to the All Blacks at Carisbrook, 1992). The smallest winning margin is just one point, a 6-5 win to the All Blacks at Landsdowne Rd in 1963.
It was third time lucky for Dan Carter with the winning drop goal in the 79th minute of the game, having missed with two previous attempts in the 58th and 78th minutes. It was just his fifth drop goal in 87 test matches.
Carter's haul of 17 points sees him overtake Andrew Merhtens as the highest scoring All Black against Ireland, with a total of 87 - all from the boot (18 conversions, 16 penalties and one drop goal).
Sam Cane made his All Blacks debut in fine style, making three ball carries in his first two minutes on the field. Overall he made seven carries for a gain of 21 metres, seven tackles and three assists.
He was also in the first three to the breakdown on 15 occasions.
Richie McCaw continued his high workrate being the All Blacks' top ball carrier with a total of 17 for a gain of 72 metres. He also made seven tackles and one assist, missing just one tackle in the game. However, for the second week in a row his handling let him down, with four knock-ons in the second half.

Andrew Hore topped the chart for arrivals at the breakdown, being in the first three to clean out on 39 occasions. McCaw was a close second with 38, while Brodie Retallick carried on from where he left off in the first test with 35 arrivals in his 65 minutes on the field.
Adam Thomson was the top tackler for the All Blacks with 11 tackles and one assist. He was also their second highest ball carrier with a total of 10 for a gain of 45 metres.
The All Blacks were made to defend in their own half for long periods in this test match, and held out the Irish for sets of 12 and 11 phases in the third quarter of the match.
Overall the All Blacks missed just eight tackles, with Tony Woodcock the chief offender with four misses.
Discpline was problematic at times for the All Blacks, conceding a total of 11 penalties to Ireland's nine. Only six penalties in total in this test match were not conceded at the breakdown.
For the second consecutive game the All Blacks' lineout ran at 100 percent, with Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick the main jumpers taking three balls each. Retallick also took the only lineout steal of the match, winning Ireland's fifth lineout throw.
The All Blacks worked 13 phases from the lineout on the Irish 10 metre line to set up for the winning drop goal, playing with just 14 men after Israel Dagg was yellow carded in the 72nd minute for leading with the elbow in an aerial charge.

GREECE TO FACE ZECH REPUBLIC AGAIN AFTER 8 YEARS

Group A makes its second match day foray into Euro 2012 action as Greece take on the Czech Republic on Tuesday June 12 at the Municipal Stadium Wroclaw, Wroclaw.
With Greece having churned out a 1-1 draw with Poland, and the Czech Republic having been thumped by Russia 4-1, there is plenty to play for going into this clash.
Having the more attacking potential, Greece and has the additional option of Dimitris Salpingidis, a substitute against Poland who came on to score the equalizer and win the penalty that was subsequently missed.
Undefeated in the tournament qualifiers and plucky winners eight years ago, Greece provides both inspiration to other small footballing nations and hope to its fans so in need of a sporting distraction.
Greece contributed admirably to the thrilling tournament opener and, in Giorgos Samaras and Theofanis Gekas, coach Fernando Santos has two frustrating yet proven goal scorers to call on.
Playing for Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2010-2011 season, Gekas scored so many goals that his underrated team was in the top four of the top German league with around half all matches played. Then, mysteriously, he stopped scoring, and Eintracht was relegated.
However, Jaroslav Plasil and Petr Jiracek are part of a Czech midfield that should be able to dominate the central parts of the pitch. Plasil, in particular, is one to watch after setting up five of his side's first eight shots against Russia, according to Opta Sports.
Completing a tricky trio is Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky. Arsene Wenger, his club coach, when recently asked about Rosicky said simply, "I love Tomas Rosicky, personally, as a man and as a player."
