BJ Penn's busted left eye 12Bet update 10/31

“Hats off to Nick Diaz, he’s the man,” said Penn (16-8-2) in the Octagon, moments after losing a 29-28, 29-27 and 29-28 decision to Diaz, a loss that would seem to put an end to Penn’s quest for a third match with longtime rival St. Pierre. “It’s probably the last time you’ll ever see me in here. I want to perform at the top level. This is the end. You know what, I’ve got another daughter on the way, I don’t want to go home looking like this.”

Penn’s face was busted up, particularly his left eye, and he had to be hospitalized after the fight.

Penn, 32, has been considered right at the top of the list of the most complete and most talented fighters in the sport since even before his first fight in 2001. Some would say, judging by his record, that he underachieved considering his insider rep from day one, even with two world titles.

Saturday’s fight was unfortunately typical of many of Penn’s fights. Once called the best one-round fighter in the world, both meant as a credit to his all-around skill and a knock on his conditioning, Penn once again tired in the second round after a solid first round and was taken apart.

But if this really is his last fight, Penn went out in style. Exhausted, fighting an opponent who was connecting with pinpoint accuracy, he fought back and landed several hard shots in the third round, but he simply couldn’t match the volume of his opponent nor move fast enough to get out of the way of the blows. In the end, while he clearly lost the fight, he also was half of one of the year’s best bouts.

“In the 10 years that we’ve all seen B.J. Penn perform, we’ve never seen B.J. busted up like this,” White said after the fight. “Even when he was getting smashed by Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre, he doesn’t bleed and he doesn’t get busted up. Nick Diaz is the real deal. But what a warrior B.J. was to stand in front of him. I honestly didn’t think B.J. was going to answer the bell for the third round as exhausted as he was. And there were moments in the third round he was firing back.- http://sports.yahoo.com

12BET UFC 137 Update 10/30

Mitrione’s inexperience shows, Kongo puts it together late to win at UFC 137

LAS VEGAS - He's was dubbed "Meathead" during Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter" for a reason. Matt Mitrione has a goofy nature about him and tonight it cost him. Mitrione never pressed on the gas pedal and allowed Cheick Kongo to grab a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 30-28, 29-28 in the co-main event at UFC 137.

The former Big 10 defensive lineman had Kongo backing up for two rounds, but when he didn't throw enough punches, it open the door for the Frenchman to get aggressive. Kongo scored two big slam takedowns in the final round and beat up Mitrione on the ground to lock up the fight.
The first two rounds were frustrating and yet exciting at times.
Kongo (17-6-2, 10-4-1 UFC) is one of the most accurate strikers in UFC history, but Mitrione didn't care. He pressed forward and made the hulking Kongo looked a little scared.
One problem though, Mitrione never let his hands go. He'd throw a flurry here or there, but he spent most of the time faking and smiling. Meanwhile, Kongo landed a few well-placed punches and scored enough with leg kicks to win over the judges.
Considering he never fought professionally until late 2009, it's not an awful loss for Mitrione. A defensive tackle at Purdue, Mitrione (5-1) spent several years bouncing around the NFL as he struggled with foot and ankle issues. The 33-year-old is extremely athletic with good natural fighting instincts. Tonight, he was just way too patient.
Kongo's now won three of four fights. The other one was a draw versus Travis Browne.

Matt Mitrione VS Cheick Kongo UFC 137 (in Las Vegas) 10/30 8AM(GMT+8)

Kongo is on the heels of one of the craziest comeback performances in MMA history, somehow surviving while hurt badly against Pat Barry in the main event of UFC on Versus 4 and then knocking him out cold just seconds later. He'll be looking to halt Matt Mitrione's rise up the UFC heavyweight ranks.
Mitrione has quietly gone 5-0 in the UFC heavyweight division and after scoring consecutive knockout victories, he's finally ready for a major test of his skills. If he can defeat the upper level gatekeeper Kongo, he will be ready to take on the elite heavyweights in the division.

Kongo had a big 5-1 stretch in his UFC career from 2007-2009 but eventual UFC champion Cain Velasquez stood in his path. Velasquez was nearly knocked out at the beginning of all three rounds by the Wolfslair fighter but would recover and put the Frenchman on his back to pull out a unanimous decision victory.
Since the loss to Cain, Kongo has gone 2-1-1 in the UFC. For some reason, he was infatuated with Travis Browne's shorts at UFC 120 which resulted in the fight being a draw. His last fight against Pat Barry was one of the most memorable of 2011. After getting rocked and nearly knocked out on 2-3 occasions in a matter of 20 seconds, Kongo pulled off the ultimate Hail Mary by knocking Barry out cold with an uppercut-cross combo of his own once he got to his feet. - http://www.mmamania.com

Hatsu Hioki VS George Roop : UFC 137 (in Las Vegas) 10/30 8AM(GMT+8)

George Roop is a WEC and UFC veteran that has made a name for himself with a couple of upsets, and he's looking to take out one more highly-touted opponent at UFC 137 when he faces Japanese star Hatsu Hioki. Roop is also competing for the first time since the death of one of his mentors, longtime trainer Shawn Tompkins.

Despite the loss of "The Coach", Roop promises that he will persevere and will carry Tompkins into the cage as "an angel on his shoulder" in his battle with one of the finest featherweight talents in the world in Hioki. He was somewhat complimentary of Hioki when discussing him, but doesn't think he deserves his ranking (Hioki is currently number 2 in the world at featherweight on the USA Today/SB Nation Consensus Rankings.Roop has been a big underdog in his last four fights and this one is no different. He managed to win two of those bouts (over Chan Sung Jung and Josh Grispi) and got hosed by a split-draw (against Leonard Garcia), so he's proven himself to be a live underdog every time he enters the cage. - http://www.bloodyelbow.com

Donald Cerrone vs Dennis Siver UFC 137 10/30 8AM GMT+8

Both of these offensive minded strikers have rocketed up the contender ladder with a recent resurgence.
After dropping a decision to Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night 21, Siver pegged four in a row over Spencer Fisher, Andre Winner, then-top-tenner George Sotiropoulos and a contentious decision over Matt Wiman. Since a Ben Henderson guillotine at WEC 48, "Cowboy" responded with five consecutive wins over Jamie Varner and Chris Horodecki in the WEC and Paul Kelly, Vagner Rocha and Charles Oliveira in the Octagon.
For Siver, the renewed vigor was preceded by an introductory four-piece UFC run that resulted in only one victory over Naoyuki Kotani (KO) with losses to Jess Liaudin (armbar), Gray Maynard (decision) and Melvin Guillard (TKO). Along with Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis, Cerrone cemented himself as a top lightweight in the WEC by plowing through everyone but Henderson (who beat him twice) and Jamie Varner, though avenged the latter convincingly in the rematch.

Tyson Griffin VS Bart Palaszewski UFC 137 (in Las Vegas) 12BET 10/30

Bart K. Palaszewski (Polish pronunciation: [palaˈʂɛfskʲi]; born May 30, 1983) is a Polish-American mixed martial artist. He fought for the Quad City Silverbacks of the now defunct International Fight League. Following the UFC/WEC merger, Palaszewski is now under contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

After immigrating to the United States from Poland with his family, Palaszewski was unsure about what he wanted to do in life. He trained whilst working as a photographer and graphic designer and holding other computer-related jobs. Then, after seeing his first MMA event at a show in McHenry, Illinois, Palaszewski was hooked. He lost his first four professional fights.
In October 2010, World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As part of the merger, most WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC.
Palaszewski was expected to face Cody McKenzie on May 28, 2011 at UFC 130. However, McKenzie was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced by Gleison Tibau.Palaszewski himself was forced from the Tibau bout with an injury and replaced by Rafaello Oliveira.

Tyson Griffin began his professional career in 2004 in the Gladiator Challenge promotion. In his third bout, he dropped to featherweight to earn a TKO victory over future World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight champion Urijah Faber, which stood as Faber's only defeat for over three years. Griffin went on to win all of his first six fights before facing Duane Ludwig at Strikeforce: Revenge. He won the bout by TKO in the first round, attracting the attention of major promotions. After considering offers from Pride Fighting Championship and the UFC, Griffin signed with the UFC so that he could continue to fight stateside. While cornering for David Terrel at UFC 59 in Las Vegas, Griffin had an opportunity to meet members of the Xtreme Couture camp for the first time.

Griffin made his UFC debut at UFC 63 against David Lee. He won the bout by rear naked choke in the first round, earning the Submission of the Night award in the process. Griffin used the money to move to Las Vegas and joined the Xtreme Couture camp.Former teammate Nick Diaz criticized Griffin as a "gym jumper", but Griffin rejected the accusation. He began 2007 with a fight against Frank Edgar at UFC 67. The back-and-forth bout ended with Edgar trapped in a tight kneebar, but the judges unanimously scored the bout in his favor, handing Griffin his first professional loss. He rebounded with two decision victories over Clay Guida and Thiago Tavares at UFC 72 and UFC 76, respectively. All three of his bouts in 2007 were declared Fight of the Night and were judged in the top 10 best of year.

Donaire retains WBC and WBO bantamweight titles

NEW YORK (AP)—Nonito Donaire retained the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles, unanimously outpointing Omar Narvaez on Saturday night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Donaire improved to 27-1, extending his nine-year winning streak to 26 fights, with winning scores of 120-108 from the judges. He failed to record a knockout for the 10th time in his last 11 fights in a performance that had most of the 4,425 fans booing the lack of action.

Narvaez (35-1-2) lost for the first time in his 11-year professional career.
Donaire won the title with an overwhelming second-round knockout of Fernando Montiel eight months ago, but this one was nowhere as easy as that left hook for the 28-year-old making his first New York appearance.

After judges awarded Donaire the first three rounds, he began to get into a groove in the fourth. Late in the round, Donaire began landing more punches and he had Narvaez against the ropes with a strong combination but that did lead to victory.

Narvaez was able to stay with him by using a defensive strategy most of the fight. He frequently kept his hands clenched near his head to avoid many strong punches and appeared content to let the bout go the distance.

Narvaez’s technical approach had some in the crowd booing at times but they cheered wildly when Donaire began landing some uppercuts late in the 10th. The booing returned in the 11th as Donaire rarely landed any punches until the final seconds of the round.

In the 12th round, Donaire landed a strong combination but could not finish. Narvaez briefly had him against the ropes but Donaire escaped though in the final seconds he flailed against the ropes.- by http://sports.yahoo.com

Hopkins asking for rematch against Dawson 12BEt update 10/22

With the WBC giving back 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins his WBC light heavyweight title on Thursday after ruling that his fight with Chad Dawson was a technical draw instead of the original ruling of a 2nd round knockout, Hopkins now wants a rematch with Dawson to try and prove that he’s the better man.

Hopkins looked bad during the two rounds of action, which ended when Hopkins fell over the back of Dawson and was bucked off by him. Hopkins hit the deck and injured his left shoulder during the fall. Some of Hopkins’ fans think the injury was legit, while a lot of other boxing fans still think Hopkins took the easy way out by flopping.
Here’s what Hopkins had to say on his twitter account: “Thanks to the WBC and Ring Magazine for making the right decision, California Athletic Commission will follow through and make it a no contest. I want a rematch to prove I am the man and Chad Dawson ain’t s*** but a sucker!. Chad talked all that s*** after the fight was stopped. I hit that ho with a body shot and I heard the air come out of him…A quitter? An actor? Come on I would be KO’d first.”

Hopkins went on to make comments about Antonio Tarver and James Toney, both of who questioned Hopkins’ resolve in the fight.

Dawson is already planning on fighting a rematch with Jean Pascal, so Hopkins is going to have to wait a while. - http://www.boxingnews24.com

12BET Boxing news update 10/21

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Bernard Hopkins has an appeal set over a controversial finish and rehabilitation ahead for a significant shoulder injury. When those issues are settled, Hopkins will have a new priority at the top of his list.Finding his next opponent. The 46-year-old Hopkins told The Associated Press on Monday he will not retire because of his injured left shoulder and the disputed call that cost him his WBC light heavyweight championship.

“I am going to fight again because I’m still the champion,” he said. “I believe I will be the champion once the proper channels are being taken.”Hopkins watched replays of his fight against Chad Dawson and still can’t believe the bizarre fashion in which he lost the title on Saturday night. He was stopped for the first time in a 23-year career when Dawson dumped him to the canvas late in the second round. No punch, more of a push. Referee Pat Russell ruled there was no foul and the belt was awarded to Dawson via TKO.

The oldest fighter to win a major championship, Hopkins (52-6-2) dislocated the joint connecting his collarbone and shoulder blade. He was scheduled for an MRI Monday on the injured left shoulder. Hopkins needs rehab no matter the outcome—but his next fight could be deep into next year if a severe tear or worse is revealed.

“My career will not end, and has no reason to end, based on Saturday night,” Hopkins said. “For what?”
Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer says the result will be appealed to the California State Athletic Commission either Monday or Tuesday. He will ask the WBC and Ring Magazine to continue to recognize Hopkins as the champion.

“It’s very clear Chad lifted his legs,” Schaefer said. The WBC posted a statement on its website Monday night that it received a “firm protest” from Golden Boy. The WBC said it is reviewing video of the bout and hoped to have a decision by the end of the week.

12BET update : Light-heavyweight fight (in Los Angeles) Dawson won by TKO at 2nd round

At 46, Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) brings a lot of interest in any remaining fights he has left in his career as fans don't know when it will be the last time they get to see him in the ring.

He became the oldest champion in the sport when he defeated Jean Pascal earlier this year. After the fight, he promised to put on the most entertaining fights in his career until it's over.

He puts his WBC light heavyweight title on the line against Chad Dawson (31-1, 17 KO), a 29-year-old whose only loss is to Pascal, tonight.

Dawson holds victories over Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson and Tomasz Adamek and looked flawless in beating them. His natural boxing ability accounts for much of his success. - http://bleacherreport.com

12BET TIPS: Light-heavyweight fight (in Los Angeles) 10/16 10AM(GMT+8)

Trash-talking with opponents, squabbling with past managers and trainers, defending his passion to people who don't know his heart — the business of boxing repulses Dawson, whose formidable skills are often obscured by everything the former light heavyweight champion doesn't have.

"I'm ready to go home and see my kids," Dawson said after a workout at a Hollywood gym. "I've been doing this for two months now. I want to do this job and get home to see my kids."

Dawson realizes his dispassionate exterior alienates those boxing fans who thrive on fury. He's an unapologetic technician, dissecting opponents with precise punching and defense in the philosophy favored by Floyd Mayweather Jr., Andre Ward, good friend Winky Wright, even Hopkins himself — all outstanding fighters with small fan bases, except Mayweather. - http://www.usatoday.com
