BOXING news 12BET update 1/1

McKENZIE-DODSON SET FOR FEBRUARY

Ovill McKenzie will defend his Commonwealth light-heavyweight title against Tony Dodson in February.

The Derby-based champion claimed the vacant belt in spectacular fashion in November when he floored Jeff Evans after just 15 seconds.

The Commonwealth Boxing Council gave McKenzie a choice of opponents for his first defence, including former foe Tony Bellew and Enzo Maccarinelli, but the 32-year-old has plumped for Dodson, with the fight scheduled to take place in Manchester on February 3.

Liverpudlian Dodson is confident of being able to wrest the belt from his Jamaican-born opponent.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "When you look down his record he has only knocked out kids.

"He has beaten people who are not at a good level and when you are fighting domestically at a lower level, of course your punch is going to be harder.

"But when he steps up in class and calibre - to the level I'm at - then his punches are not going to be as hard.

"His last opponent (Evans) looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

"I will beat McKenzie in every way, shape and form.

"My speed and overall boxing ability will beat him.

"I've fought better fighters than Ovill McKenzie." - http://www.sportinglife.com/
