Homecoming for Bellew

British champion to make his comeback in Liverpool

Tony Bellew will defend his British light-heavyweight title against Norwich's Danny McIntosh in Liverpool on April 14.
Bellew suffered the first defeat of his career when he challenged for Nathan Cleverly's WBO strap in October, losing on two of the scorecards.
But he will be looking to impress on his return to the ring against 31-year-old McIntosh, who also lost to then-British and Commonwealth champ Cleverly in 2009.
"I feel I'm at world level now," he said. "Nathan Cleverly is a world-class fighter and in a lot of people's eyes I beat Cleverly, and I showed a lot of good tools that people maybe didn't expect.
"Danny's a good European-level fighter but I feel I'm a world-class fighter."
Promoter Dave Coldwell added: "It's a pleasure to put on a big show like this for Liverpool, Tony Bellew is now one of the game's biggest names.
"He has been pushed to the forefront of British boxing after his fight with Nathan Cleverly and is defending his British title against a very dangerous opponent."
McIntosh has solid credentials after picking up the European title 12 months ago only to lose it in his first defence. - http://www1.skysports.com/

WARREN DENIES DeGALE WILL MOVE ON

James DeGale's management team Frank Warren Promotions have insisted the Olympic gold medallist remained under contract to them until April 2013.

The 24-year-old had earlier announced in a statement released by his solicitors, Blick & Co, that he would be moving on from manager Warren's stable of fighters.

The European super-middleweight champion from Harlesden, London, said in his short statement: "I think it is time for both of us to move on."

However, his management company have denied that will be happening and released their own statement in response.

"We have seen the press reports today in which James DeGale states that he is to split from his manager Frank Warren," the statement from Frank Warren Promotions read.

"This is not true; James DeGale is in fact under contract until 14 April 2013."

DeGale shot to prominence four years ago by winning middleweight gold at the Beijing Games.

He turned professional later that year and joined Warren's promotional stable along with fellow Olympians Billy Joe Saunders and Frankie Gavin. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Frampton knocks out Hughes

'Jackal' retains unbeaten record with thrilling finish in Bethnal Green

Carl Frampton stopped Kris Hughes in the seventh round to successfully defend his Commonwealth super-bantamweight title at York Hall.

The man from Belfast, who is being guided by Barry McGuigan, won every round against a much taller man who had little to offer in the form of attack.

Frampton, who has been talked up as an opponent for British champion Scott Quigg later this year, showed plenty of variety as he broke down Hughes piece by piece.

His tactics worked from the outset, repeatedly drawing Hughes' right hand lead before countering with a right of his own.

Hughes tried to work behind a long raking jab but when he did come into range he seemed unable to offload a combination likely to trouble the much smaller man.

The 'Jackal' worked the body early in the third with the left hook clearly having an effect on his opponent. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Frampton focused on Hughes

Commonwealth champion not looking past first defence

Carl Frampton is taking it one fight at a time as he prepares to defend his Commonwealth super-bantamweight title against Kris Hughes on Saturday night.

The 24-year-old from Belfast stopped Mark Quon inside four rounds to win the title last year, and has been named in connection with British champion Scott Quigg and European ace Kiko Martinez

However, Hughes has already fought for the title - losing narrowly to the tough Jamie Arthur - and represents a solid test for the undefeated Frampton.

But the current champion is not short on motivation.

"He's a tall, awkward southpaw, he may be hard to get to for a while," said Frampton. "But he's been saying a few things to reporters and online that I'm not worth the hype and so on. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Koncz: Mayweather's not out of the picture

Michael Koncz, the advisor to WBO welterweight beltholder Manny Pacquiao, told RingTV.com on Monday that he is in Las Vegas to speak with Top Rank Inc. CEO Bob Arum about Pacquiao's next opponent.
Although WBA junior middleweight beltholder Miguel Cotto appears to be the current frontrunner, Koncz told RingTV.com that WBC welterweight titleholder Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not yet out of the picture.
Koncz would not confirm or deny whether or not he expects to meet with Mayweather, who lives in Las Vegas.

"I am in Las Vegas right now having various discussions and meetings with different people, and we have not closed the door on Floyd Mayweather," said Koncz.

"I'm here in Las Vegas pursuant to Manny's instructions trying to finalize his next bout. No doors have been shut on any of our options to this point."

Pacquiao has been targeted for a return bout on June 9 in Las Vegas at either the Thomas & Mack Center or the MGM Grand, with the possibilities being Cotto, Mayweather, RING lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, IBF/WBA junior welterweight titleholder Lamont Peterson or WBO junior welterweight beltholder Tim Bradley.- http://ringtv.craveonline.com

Price keen to face Fury

Mandatory challenger thinks business interests could scupper bout

English heavyweight champion David Price is eager to get in the ring with Tyson Fury, but thinks his domestic rival may not accept the challenge.

Price extended his unbeaten record over the weekend with a first round knockout of John McDermott, a fighter Fury struggled against over the course of two bouts.

The Liverpool fighter is now the mandatory challenger to Fury's British title and the Price camp want to arrange a showdown between the two unbeaten prospects.

But Price thinks that while Fury may want to test himself against the Olympic bronze medallist, he may view the fight as too much of a risk from a business standpoint. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Commonwealth champ believes The Cobra's focus is elsewhere

British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves insists he is in no hurry to fight Carl Froch.

Groves enjoyed a stellar 2011 as he toppled Olympic champion James DeGale in a fierce grudge match before seeing off the highly-rated Paul Smith with a second-round stoppage.

The 23-year-old appears to be destined for a world title shot in the next two years, but an all-British clash against Froch, who lost his WBC belt to WBA champion Andre Ward in Atlantic City last month, is a prospect many in the boxing world would like to see first.

And although Groves is up for fighting Froch in the near future, he admits he would be wasting his time if he were to start sounding out the Nottingham-based 'Cobra' now.

"A fight with Froch would be a big British fight and that's what gets people really excited, but he is not interested in fighting me," Groves said. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Marsili too much for Matthews

Undefeated Italian maintains record with brutal win in Liverpool

Derry Matthews failed in his bid to claim the vacant IBO lightweight belt on Friday night as he was stopped by undefeated Italian Emiliano Marsili in Liverpool.

Matthews - who was fighting for his first world title since losing the WBU featherweight belt to Choi Tseveenpurev in 2008 - simply had no answer to the speed and power of Marsili.

The Italian was on top from the outset and quickly began to mark his opponent with blood streaming from Matthews' face by the mid-point of the bout.

Marsili put his opponent down with a body shot in the sixth and, while Matthews bravely made the count, the referee eventually stepped in a round later after another brutal barrage from the Italian.

It was the 24th victory of Marsili's career with the 35-year-old chalking up his tenth stoppage win.

"I thought I hurt him but he came back, he's a warrior," Matthews told Box Nation afterwards.

"My nose went in the first round, well, it went in sparring but I'm a Scouser and I love fighting. I'm not making excuses, Marsili beat me."- http://www1.skysports.com

Price wastes no time

Tyson Fury awaits in domestic heavyweight showdown

Liverpool heavyweight David Price scored a 73-second stoppage win in his British title eliminator against John McDermott.

The Beijing Olympic bronze medallist landed three clattering blows in the first round and three times McDermott went to the canvas.

The third time he was unable to continue and the 6ft 8in Price took his unbeaten record to 12-0 as a result.

His reward is the English heavyweight title and a British title fight against the unbeaten Tyson Fury, who won a hotly disputed points victory over McDermott.

Defeat means the 31-year-old McDermott will not get a fourth chance to fight for the British title.

Price told Sky Sports: "Exactly what I needed but I didn't expect to take John McDermott out like that. Even I don't know how hard I'm hitting. That was a peach of an uppercut I hit him with."

John McDermott is a tough opponent. No one has done that to him, but I knew before the fight he had never been hit like I was going to hit him and it showed then."

As for Fury, Price added: "Tyson Fury is a fighting man. People say he's going to avoid me. I know Tyson Fury will fight me because he's a fighting man and otherwise he will look like a bit of a coward.

"He's stuck between a rock and a hard place. He's not ready to move on to world level but can he fight me? We'll wait and see but I think he will." - http://www1.skysports.com

Eric Schafer vs Jorge Rivera UFC (in Nashville, TN) 12BET online sports betting 1/21 9AM GMT+8

Rivera has the strong edge in striking. He’s landed more strikes, been more efficient, and been much heavier-handed (delivering 9.2 knockdowns + knockouts per hour compared to just 1.0 for Schafer).
The numbers don’t give a strong advantage in grappling to either fighter. For all the talk about Schafer’s chances on the ground, his grappling hasn’t impressed statistically.

Other factors: Schafer will have a 3.5″ reach advantage (which is significant, advantage Schafer). This will be Schafer’s third fight down at middleweight, having previously fought at light heavy (advantage unknown).- http://www.opposingviews.com

Team Khan's hearing fears

Golden Boy Promotions to focus their full attention on next fight

Amir Khan's promoters claim they withdrew their appeal over the controversial defeat to Lamont Peterson because they feared the IBF hearing would be "one-sided" and not "fully transparent".

Khan, along with father Shah and business manager Asif Vali, had flown to America ahead of the hearing in New Jersey, only for it to be cancelled at the 11th hour.

Golden Boy Promotions released a statement outlining their reasons and chief executive Richard Schaefer has revealed they feared they would not get a fair hearing.

Two men central to Khan's complaints - referee Joe Cooper and WBS supervisor Michael Welsh - would not be present at the hearing.

Cooper has been accused by Khan of unfairly docking him two points in the split decision loss, while Welsh was the man seen being approached and allegedly interfered with by 'mystery man' Mustafa Ameen, who had no apparent reason to be there.

A statement from Golden Boy read: "Due to the fact that there was only to be partial representation of fight officials who were involved with the December 10, 2011 Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson bout at tomorrow's scheduled appeal hearing of the fight's outcome before the International Boxing Federation (IBF), Golden Boy Promotions and Team Khan have decided to withdraw their appeal and focus their full attention on Amir's next fight." - http://www1.skysports.com

DAVID HAYE KEEPING IN SHAPE

David Haye has confirmed he is staying in shape in case a fight with one of the Klitschko brothers is agreed.

The Englishman, who lost widely to Wladimir Klitschko in a heavyweight unification bout last summer, officially retired in October but has been involved in informal, on-off negotiations over a fight with his brother, WBC champion Vitali, ever since.

Hopes of fighting Vitali appeared to take a dent when the Ukrainian veteran agreed to take on Haye's countryman Dereck Chisora next month, but Haye is unconcerned and reaffirmed yet again that nothing has changed.

"My people are talking loosely with Vitali's people and they have shown a keen interest in a potential fight," the Bermondsey fighter, 31, told BBC Sport.

"I'm going to stay in shape if that call comes, and if it does come I will be heavyweight champion again."If there is a fight that pops up - against Vitali or Wladimir - I'll be in shape and be ready to go to war and win back my old titles." - http://www.sportinglife.com/

Williams secures bout

New Zealand centre Sonny Bill Williams will face Clarence Tillman III in a heavyweight title bout after his original opponent Richard Tutaki was arrested.

Williams was left disappointed when plans to fight Tutaki in Hamilton on February 8 were called off after his opponent was arrested on 10 charges including the possession of drugs and stolen property.

"It's pretty disappointing the cops got to Richard before I could," he said.

However the 26-year-old, who has won all four of his professional bouts so far, will now face Tillman for the vacant New Zealand heavyweight belt with the date and venue remaining unchanged.

"The fight is going to be a huge challenge," said Williams, who helped New Zealand to the World Cup title. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Sprott suffers Pulev defeat

British heavyweight retires after ninth round

British heavyweight Michael Sprott was forced to retire on his stool at the end of the ninth round of his fight against unbeaten Kubrat Pulev in Offenburg, Germany.

The 30-year-old Bulgarian (15-0, 7 KOs) dominated the bout from early on and was coasting towards a points win before his veteran opponent eventually threw in the towel.

Sprott (36-18, 17 KOs), who was returning to the ring for the first time since an unsuccessful bid for the European heavyweight title back in September, has now lost his last three fights and offered little to trouble Pulev on this occasion.

On the same card, Arthur Abraham won the vacant WBO European super middleweight title with a fifth-round stoppage of Pablo Farias.

The German (33-3, 27KOs) knocked his Argentine opponent (19-2, 11KOs) down three times in the fifth round before the referee intervened.

Meanwhile Robert Stieglitz claimed a unanimous decision over Henry Weber to retain his WBO super middleweight title.

The German (41-2, 23KOs) was in full control throughout the fight, which was scored 118-110, 116-112 and 119-109 in his favour, and is now on course to meet Mikkel Kessler later this year. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Accidental clash of heads in fourth round causes nasty gash

Sam Sexton recorded a win over Larry Olubamiwo at the York Hall on Friday night, though victory came at a cost for the Norwich heavyweight.

The all-British bout was evenly poised when it was stopped in the fifth round due to a nasty cut on the left side of Sexton's head.

The 27-year-old was declared the winner 49-48 by the solitary judge at ringside, meaning he improves his professional record to 15-2.

However the former Commonwealth champion had found it tough going against Olubamiwo, who had not fought since suffering a disastrous first-round loss to John McDermott last February.

The key moment of the contest came in the fourth when the two big men clashed heads, leaving Sexton with blood pouring down his face.

On three occasions the referee called a time out to let the doctor inspect the damage before eventually deciding that Sexton could not continue. - http://www1.skysports.com

Pacquiao keen on Money clash

Filipino eager to finally face off against Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao has confirmed he would relish the chance to take on Floyd Mayweather as their long-awaited showdown moves ever closer to becoming a reality.

The Filipino fighter continues to attach conditions to a deal though, and has urged Mayweather to come up with the right money to make the event happen.

Mayweather took to Twitter this week to call on Pacquiao to make their superfight happen on May 5.

Speculation over the two celebrated fighters meeting has been building for a long time but was dealt a blow when Mayweather was handed a 90-day jail term for domestic violence.

New hope arrived last week when a judge agreed to let Mayweather's sentence begin from June 1 and the undefeated American has gone public with his preferred date, telling Pacquiao in a 'Tweet': "Step up punk."

The Pacquiao camp reportedly want a date later in May, at a specially-constructed 45,000-seat arena in Las Vegas rather than the 17,000-capacity MGM Grand, due to the potential to increase earnings.

"This is the fight the world wants," 33-year-old Pacquiao was reported as saying.

Mayweather wants a guaranteed purse so what he has to do is get a promoter who can give him the guarantee.

"I don't have problems getting a guarantee because I have a promoter who will give me my guaranteed purse.

"If he gets a guarantee, then we are going to share the revenue on a 50-50 basis." - http://www1.skysports.com/

12BET Boxing News 1/12

Pacquiao camp: No fight with Mayweather on May 5

MANILA, Philippines (AP)—Manny Pacquiao’s camp says there is no economic sense in setting up a bout with Floyd Mayweather on May 5 after the unbeaten American publicly challenged the Filipino champion via Twitter.
Pacquiao’s financial adviser Michael Koncz told The Associated Press on Thursday that a 45,000-seat boxing arena being built in Las Vegas won’t be finished before the end of May and staging the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight in a smaller venue is “foolish from an economic standpoint.”
Mayweather challenged and taunted Pacquiao to a May 5 bout in a tweet on Tuesday.
“Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see,” he tweeted.
Mayweather is available for a fight in May at the MGM Grand Garden after a judge agreed last week to postpone his jail sentence for domestic violence until June. Mayweather was sentenced to 87 days in jail, but likely will serve less time.
The MGM Grand seats about 17,000, which could fetch around $20 million in sales, but the larger arena could raise an additional $30 million, Koncz said.
“Why would I tell Manny to fight on the 5th and throw away a percentage of 30 million? That’s crazy,” he said.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has told the Philippines’ GMA television the only reason the fight won’t happen is if there is an “economic problem.”
He said the fight “could happen very, very easily” at the end of May— enough time to build the outdoor arena “the fight so badly needs.”
“I will also guarantee Manny’s purse,” he said. “In other words, Manny doesn’t want to go into the ring and just fight out a percentage.”
He said Mayweather is looking for “outside parties to guarantee his end of the purse.”
“So, until he finds the angel, there is no fight,” Arum said.
In a separate interview with GMA, Pacquiao said that if Mayweather agrees to a “50-50 sharing, there will be no problem.”
“The purse is not the issue right now, the date is,” Koncz said. “But we don’t have a problem splitting it 50-50.”- http://sports.yahoo.com/
